AESC Recreational Activities
62nd Annual Meeting - 2019


Welcome to Bermuda!

We have arranged a number of group activities planned for you and your family during the AESC's 62nd Annual Meeting at in Bermuda.  In addition, there are other events you might want to consider that are general, public functions.  We're listing those for your convenience, but the Club is not making arrangements for those items. 

Additional registration fees for the Club-sponsored events are necessary since there are extra costs associated.  Activities sponsored by the Club also include transportation (when necessary) since visitors are not permitted to rent cars.

Please note -- This list may not include all of the activities that have been organized by members themselves, such as golf, scuba dives or other excursions.  To the extent possible, we may post information about those activities below.

Online registration for recreational is now closed.  If you have any changes or requests, please contact Kathy Paul at the AESC administrative office.

Please note . . . Some of the activities listed below are now wait-list only, and all of the "outside" events are nearly full.  If you are interested in one of the items below that are closed to new registrations, please contact the AESC office to have your name placed on the wait-list.

Wednesday, July 31st

Spouse Activity

9:30 - 11:00 a.m.

Spouse Book Club -- Gather immediately after the Family Breakfast.  Get together with other Club spouses to renew old friendships and make new ones.  We'll be discussing "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks," by Rebecca Skloot.   CLICK HERE to view book description on Amazon. 
Younger Kids Outing
(age 6 - 12)
9:30 - 11:30 a.m.
Bermuda Kite Making -- Younger kids will make -- and hopefully fly -- an authentic Bermuda kite in this supervised activity on-site at the hotel.  Scheduled to take place during the spouse book club.  Read a little more about Bermuda kites here.
$55 per child
Older Kids Outing
(age 13 and up)

9:30 - 11:30 a.m.

Learn to Scuba - Dive Bermuda will teach our teenagers some basics about scuba diving, and then the kids will experience a dive just off the hotel's private beach in a sheltered bay.  Takes place during the spouse book club.
$150 per participant

Afternoon Family Outing - - 
Catamaran Sail and Coral Reef Snorkeling
 

Time - approximately 2 - 5 p.m.

If the idea of seeing blue parrotfish, four-eyed butterflyfish, sergeant majors, wrasses and many other species of fish gliding around the beautiful corals and sea fans appeals to you, then an AESC snorkel trip may be just what you are looking for. The Study Club group will sale by chartered catamaran to a coral reef for an afternoon snorkeling adventure.
$145 per person

Competitive Sailing Regatta - 
Royal Bermuda Yacht Club

1:30 - 5:30 p.m. (departing the hotel at 1 p.m.)

You've heard of the Chicago to Mackinac Race and America's Cup.  Now get ready for the AESC's own race supervised by "Commodore" Greg Miarecki (Chris Albanis' husband).  We'll be transported to the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club where our racers will board our fleet of J80 sailboats for some friendly competition on the water.  We'll divide into two sections, crews of 4 (or 5) sailors plus an experienced helmsman.  Relax on the RBYC Terrace while the other section is on the water, followed by a short reception to announce the winners.
$150 per racer - includes transportation to the yacht club

Wednesday Evening - Harbour Nights

7 - 10 p.m.

Whether you participate in one of the afternoon organized activities or you just chill around the hotel pool, consider going in to Hamilton for the annual summer festival, Harbour Nights.  CLICK HERE for information about this open street festival that is popular with visitors and Bermudans alike.

Thursday, August 1st
AESC Tennis Tournament

1:30 - 4:30 p.m.
The Club's annual round robin tennis tournament has become a popular outing on the courts.  This year, we'll be playing at the Fairmont Southampton's own tennis facility overlooking the beach. Rental rackets will be available.
$25 per player fee includes tennis balls, water.

Explore the Crystal Caves

2:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Our group is in for a real treat when they explore the Crystal Caves, Bermuda's underground natural wonder.  The moment you complete your descent down the walkway into Crystal Cave, you know you are on a journey of amazing natural beauty. Pathways of floating pontoons spread out before you, spanning a crystal-clear underground lake. 
$54 per person, includes round trip transportation and admission to the caves.

Friday, August 3rd

Free time to explore and have fun

Friday afternoon is the perfect time to set out on your own to explore Bermuda.  Check out downtown Hamilton or the Royal Dockyards.  Catch day two of the Bermuda Cup Cricket Match.  Or just enjoy the warm waters and natural beauty at the Fairmont's private beach.  The afternoon is completely at your leisure. 

Keep in mind that the annual AESC Banquet takes place on the beach Friday evening.

Saturday, August 4th

AESC Golf Outing
Port Royal Golf Club

First tee time is 8:30 a.m.

Ranked among the world’s best public golf courses by Golf Digest, Port Royal Golf Course features 18 championship holes over 6,842 manicured yards, the longest and most picturesque course in all of Bermuda.   Originally designed by world-renowned architect Robert Trent Jones Sr., Port Royal has recently undergone a $14.5 million renovation.  It now is of the world’s premier public golf courses boasting sweeping ocean views from nearly every hole.
$225 per player, includes greens fees, cart, range balls and water, as well as round trip transportation.

Tour Historic St. George's
Morning excursion
Departing the hotel at 9 a.m., 
Returning by 1:30 p.m. 

Natural Wonders and Bermuda's Beginnings -- Step back in time as you stroll the centuries-old brick streets of the Town of St. George, Bermuda's former capital and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The well-preserved historic town and nearby fortress make St. George's and the East End a haven for British colonial architecture, history and culture.  We have arranged for round trip transportation from the hotel to St. George.  A guide will talk about the history and key sites you'll be able to take in.  You'll have time for lunch on your own.
$50 per participant

Kayak Eco Adventure
9 a.m. - 12 noon

Glide across Bermuda’s turquoise waters on a guided paddling tour.  You'll have incredible glimpses of the colorful sea life directly beneath you, and you'll learn all about the island’s marine and coastal ecology.  The group will be transported by boat to meet up with your kayak guide for this amazing adventure.
$150 per participant

Member-organized Activities

Some Club members have booked activities on their own and opened them up for other members to participate.  To the extent we are able, those events and details are listed below. If all of the spots have been filled, we will note that fact.

Other Independent Things To Do in Bermuda on Your Own

There's a lot to see and do in Bermuda.  For those not taking advantage of the organized activities listed above or during free time, you may wish to spend some time shopping or sightseeing in Hamilton, or head out to the Royal Naval Dockyards on the island's West End.  You may even try your skill at driving a motor scooter on the "wrong" side of the road... there's a scooter rental facility adjacent to the Fairmont.
